Christmas 2009 was a very successful one for my family, and a very joyful one for most of them. I, however, was taken back by this holiday for the first time in my 17 Christmases. It didn't seem like the joyful holiday that the department stores, churches, and general concensus make it out to be. A perfect God had to send his one son, also perfect, to save a dying world and millions of dying people like myself? It just doesn't seem fair. So while we can truly celebrate and be happy because this event brought us hope and salvation, it just doesn't seem all that joyful for the One who made the entire thing happen. Actually, it seems very sad. I'm obviously not a father, but I've seen many fathers who show an undying love for their children, and I can only imagine what one of them goes through when a child is lost. While God knew the final result and the eternal life that would come for all when He sent His son, it still must've been awful having to send His only child on a seek and save rescue mission for all of mankind. Fortunately for us, God is a God of love, and He was willing to do anything to save His people. So as I reflect on this holiday season, I'm not filled with that same joy that so many people find this time of year; rather, I see the indescribable pain of a father giving up a son, of a son laying down his life for an unworthy people. This is true love in its purest form, that Christ should willingly lay down his own life for the life of sinners like us. And it all started on a silent night in Bethlehem over 2000 years ago...
Wow.
